The Fear of Change: Why We Avoid Stepping into Our Healing

Young woman with curly hair looking pensive | The Vital Spirit | Laura Rowe | Empath Mentor

"Change can feel like loss at first. But on the other side of endings, new beginnings are quietly taking shape."

There is a quiet, heavy truth that we rarely whisper about in the healing and spiritual wellness space: the absolute terror of what healing might actually demand of us.

So many highly sensitive souls, empaths, and cycle-breakers find themselves secretly frozen. You might buy the books, listen to the podcasts, and gather the tools, yet when it comes to dropping deep into your actual body and looking at your life with unshielded eyes, a subconscious emergency brake slams on.

We stay busy. We overthink. We analyze our patterns from a safe, intellectual distance.

We do this because, deep down in our bones, we know things are shifting. We feel the rumblings of an inevitable transition on the horizon—a career that no longer fits, a relationship that has run its course, or a life transition like a relocation that we aren’t sure we are ready for.  We have a fear of change.

Our subconscious mind, trying desperately to protect us, makes a terrifying assumption: The moment you look your truth in the eyes, you will be forced to take a violent, immediate leap off a cliff before you are ready.

So, to avoid the cliff, we hide from the healing. But there is a different way to move through the world.

What the Fear of Change Costs Us

When we try to lock our truth in a dark closet, it doesn’t dissolve. It simply changes form.

The energy required to keep the lid on your emerging truth is immense. It acts as a constant drain on your life force, manifesting in your physical body as:

  • The “Survival Hover”: A low-grade, subconscious habit of rising slightly out of your physical body to escape the heavy, uncomfortable emotional undercurrents of your reality.
  • Identity Fatigue: The metabolic exhaustion of pretending everything is fine, shape-shifting to keep the peace, and managing how everyone else is reacting.
  • Nervous System Dysregulation: A chronic state of fight-or-flight, where your body equates staying still with being exposed and vulnerable.
  • Chronic Illness: The highly-attuned nervous system makes us vulnerable to the many toxins we are exposed to in this world.

We think we are protecting ourselves and our loved ones by delaying the inevitable, but the truth is that the longer we hide from the whisper of change, the harder and scarier it actually becomes.

The anxiety we feel isn’t always a sign of a broken life; often, it is simply the friction of our growth rubbing against the tight, outdated container of our old life.

Exploring Without Deciding: The Myth of Urgency

Our modern, mind-centric culture has trained us to believe that clarity and decision-making must happen instantly, logically, and under intense pressure. We are taught to treat life transitions like corporate deadlines.

But when your nervous system is in a state of survival panic, forcing a major life choice—whether to stay or leave, to leap or hold back—only stokes more fear, overthinking, and a feeling of moving backward.

You are allowed to explore major life transitions without the pressure to make a decision.

In fact, you must.

If you are navigating a potential divorce, planning a major relocation, or shifting your career, you do not have to jump. You are allowed to stand at the threshold, look out over the landscape, and let your body catch up to your awareness.

This is the essence of Sacred Pacing. It is a commitment to moving at the speed of your own integrity, not the urgent, artificial timeline of a deadline-obsessed world.

Standing in the Limbo: The Somatic Practice

True alignment cannot be forced from the head; it must be built from the body upward. When you find yourself sitting in the “messy middle” of a transition, paralyzed by the fear of what comes next, try shifting your focus from solving your life to stabilizing your system.

1. Inhabit the Vessel First

You cannot make an aligned choice if you are hovering outside your body. Before you try to figure out your five-year plan, drop your awareness back down into your physical temple.

  • Practice: Sit with your feet flat on the floor. Visualize a thick, glowing tree root extending from the base of your spine deep into the Earth, anchoring your nervous system. Breathe into your lower abdomen, claiming your right to occupy your body, right here, right now.

2. Deliver the Energetic Triage Check

When the panic of future-planning hits your chest, pause and run a quick somatic audit. We often carry collective panic or ancestral fears of survival that don’t actually belong to us.

  • Practice: Place a hand on your heart and ask: “Is this anxiety actually mine?” If it feels floaty, chaotic, or urgent, it is likely external static or outdated ancestral programming. Exhale slowly, visualizing that energy draining down your grounding root into the Earth to be neutralized.

3. Follow the “Just-in-Time” Breadcrumbs

We avoid change because we think we need to see the entire staircase before we take the first step. But Spirit operates on Just-in-Time economics—delivering the resources, clarity, and energy you need only as you actively step forward.

  • Practice: Stop looking at the horizon. Ask your body: What is the absolute smallest, gentlest next step I can take today that feels supportive? It might be writing in a journal, making a nourishing meal, or taking a five-minute walk. Follow the breadcrumb. Trust that the next one will appear once you’ve arrived.

The Natural Exhale

When you allow yourself to slow down the speed of change, something beautiful happens; your nervous system realizes it is safe.

Your physical body relaxes. The “limbo” stops feeling like an agonizing trap and begins to feel like a spacious, sacred harbor where you are allowed to rest and receive.

When somatic safety is restored, the big decisions no longer feel like a violent, terrifying leap off a cliff. Instead, the right path reveals itself with absolute self-trust. The next step becomes as simple, quiet, and inevitable as your next exhale.

You are allowed to go slow.

You are allowed to not know yet.

You are allowed to change your mind as many times as you need to.

Your sovereignty is yours to hold, at a pace that honors your soul.

I have invested over 35 years exploring spiritual traditions and practices. Spending close to 20 years training and working in intuitive energy healing modalities, with certificates in reiki and Theta Healing. For 8 of those years, working with a mentor, Linda Kardos, who was a pioneer in intuitive energy healing. As an empath myself, I understand feeling different, misunderstood, and judged for my sensitivities. I care deeply about empowering empaths to inhabit their whole self — accepting and deeply connecting with the truth of their being.
