Understanding Your Inner Landscape

The spiritual journey is one of the most universal and timeless human experiences—a process of inner transformation, deepening awareness, and the search for meaning, truth, or connection with something greater than yourself. At its heart, the spiritual path moves from unconscious living toward awakened presence. It is a shift away from identifying solely with your ego and surface life toward recognizing a much deeper dimension of existence. While every person's path is unique, the spiritual journey for an empath typically unfolds across several universal stages.

Awakened Presence

The spiritual journey is the inward turning of moving from unconscious living (identifying solely with the ego and surface life) to an awakened presence where you recognize a deeper dimension of existence.

Spirit Guides & The Breadcrumb

Your guides and your intuition are rarely going to give you the five-year plan. Spirit operates on “Just-in-Time” economics, giving you the “breadcrumb”—the impulse for the exact next right step.

Connecting to the Higher Self

Your Higher Self is the version of you that exists outside of the noise; it is the fully integrated, healed you that is aware of your soul’s blueprint. You access this voice when you are grounded and in a state of flow.

Surrender & Letting Go

As the ego’s grip loosens, you shift from striving and controlling to trusting and receiving. Surrender isn’t quitting and it isn’t giving up. It is stopping your push and trusting that the universe will resolve the situation and you will be better in the end.

Integration and Return

The insights gained on the mountaintop do not stay there; they must be woven into your daily life. The spiritual path spirals and doubles back—it is rarely a straight line—but it ultimately transforms you so that your awakened presence becomes a service to the world.

The Healing Spiral

The universe does not move in a straight line, and the path never ends. When you circle back to old struggles, you are not backsliding or failing. You are meeting the same lesson from a higher, more evolved vantage point to heal it on a deeper level.

The Language of Energy

Glossary of Terms

Glossary of Healing Terms

For those who are unfamiliar with empaths and energy, this is an attempt to make sure we are speaking the same language. We use a lot of words in this work that may be unfamiliar to some people, and sometimes other practices and schools of thought offer slightly different meanings.

Ancestral Healing

Tracing patterns of trauma and limiting beliefs through families to find the originating event and bring healing to it. By healing the originating event/ancestor, the family, and more specifically the person requesting the healing, can break free from the family pattern of trauma. They are then free to change the story for themselves and their descendants. Most indigenous cultures perform rituals for healing the dead so their descendants aren’t burden with their traumas. The Crusades in the Middle Ages wiped out the indigenous cultures and practices of Western Europe to spread Christianity. Meaning Western Europeans and their descendants, have no healing rituals. Trauma still lives in them and has been passed down through epi-genetics to their descendants. This is known as generational trauma. Read more on ancestral healing and generational trauma here and here.

Collective consciousness, collective conscience, or collective conscious is the set of shared beliefs, ideas, and moral attitudes held in our collective energy which operate as a unifying force within society. In general, it does not refer to the specifically moral conscience, but to a shared understanding of social norms.

Some may consider it a rite of passage for all spiritual seekers. A period of time where our faith and beliefs are examined, broken down and rebuilt. “You feel totally alone. You don’t know many, if any, people that have gone through this. You don’t feel like being bothered with loved ones and friends that don’t understand because they either think you are crazy and need help or their own fears arise about it and make matters even worse. You barely have any energy or interests anymore.” These passages seem a necessary part of self-reflection and deep introspection.

The ego-driven survival mask empaths wear to shape-shift, blend in, and be accepted by others. The empath ability to take on the personality characteristics of the person or group they are socializing with. Also known as “masking” this ability is driven by a desire to be accepted and blend in. Masking is also possible because empaths often people please making it difficult and uncomfortable to know themselves and what they care about.

A person who has come into this world destined to create change and spiritually awaken humanity. Indigos are considered to be freethinkers with profound insight into the human condition with an ability to see the truth clearly. Read more about Indigos. Related to crystal and starseed people.

Lightworkers are those who volunteered, before birth, to help the planet and its population heal from the effects of fear. Each lightworker is here for a sacred purpose. Very often, however, life on earth with its material focus creates a form of amnesia in lightworkers. They then forget their divine and perfect identities, and also their abilities to miraculously help the earth and all living creatures. When lightworkers forget their true identity and purpose, they feel lost and afraid.

A Buddhist concept of earning a living ethically and in accordance with Buddhist precepts. In recent years, this term’s definition has broadened to mean earning a living in accordance with a person’s own values and spirituality.

Working with your unconscious mind to uncover the parts of yourself that you repress and hide from yourself. This can include trauma or parts of your personality that you subconsciously consider undesirable. Your shadow is the parts of your personality that are rejected because they conflict with your ego’s self-concept. The goal of shadow work is self-acceptance. Bringing to your awareness, behavior or beliefs that hurt you or other people so they can be integrated into your consciousness and healed/transformed within your personality.
A spiritual awakening is a call to higher consciousness and deeper mental awareness. The process of spiritual awakening brings about personal transformation and a shift in one’s worldview. A spiritual awakening can be gradual or rapid, and it can mean different things to different people. It can be beautiful and magical however, it can also be scary and destabilizing. It is a process that needs support and validation.

Surviving the Dark Night of the Soul

"The dark night of the soul comes just before revelation. When everything is lost, and all seems darkness, then comes the new life and all that is needed." ~ Joseph Campbell

Surviving the Dark Night of the Soul | The Vital Spirit | Laura Rowe | Empath Mentor

Growth is the Point

Growth is done primarily through incremental change. However, incremental change is not always able to help us when the path to our desired goal has roadblocks. The emotional blocks and limiting beliefs that keep us from actualizing our dreams call for radical change. And radical change in this scenario looks like a crisis of faith or the dark night of the soul.

Each time I have followed the path down into the darkness, I have believed “this time I won’t come out of it.” I can’t tell you what exactly I think is going to happen, but the end of life as I know it seems assured. In order to grow, sometimes you have to break down the constructs of our “truth” completely.

New truths, new paths, new choices come to light only after we have been stripped of our beliefs, our “certainty,” and our expectations. A true test of faith, not in some god, but in ourselves. Can we really change? Can we achieve what we say we want? Can we own our greatness and move forward in embodying our power on a deeper level

The build-up to the breakdown can seem slow and awkward, but when the dark night of the soul is upon us, it feels enormous, life ending, and yet it is actually liberating. Liberating because when we get down that low and feel that bad, we are perfectly willing to let go of things like pride, fear of judgment, and self-consciousness, just to move out of that pain and discomfort. In our disorientation, we drop our egoic safety nets and pull ourselves back up with a wisdom that is only gained through great struggle.

The roadblocks are removed, revealing for the first time choices, insights, and perspectives that we simply couldn’t have seen without the breakdown. We have experienced a radical growth spurt similar in many ways to a major seismic event. A rearranging of our thoughts, cells, belief systems, that finally allows us to move forward again on our path.

Every soul has a singular experience on the dark night, but there are common landmarks during the journey and I wanted to share with you a few insights that have helped me find my way back to the path.

Surviving the Dark Night of the Soul | The Vital Spirit | Laura Rowe | Empath Mentor

Release your judgment of your experience (or yourself), it is all Divine.

Everything that is happening is divine, including our own reactions and behavior. There is no darkness or evil that is threatening you. There is only what is necessary to strip away those roadblocks. Our struggle is leading us exactly where we have chosen to go. In order to achieve our dreams, we have to face our limiting beliefs and we have to heal our emotional wounds. That is the purpose of the dark night of the soul. EVERYTHING that we experience in our pain and fear is happening to help us push past our own self-imposed limits.

Let the breakdown take you because on the other side of the fear lay your dreams and goals. This process is crumbling your old structure and requiring you to build a new, cleaner structure that can lead you to those dreams you have been working so hard to achieve. Physical Manifestations: Learning disabilities, coordination problems, sleep disorders, visual defects, short-sightedness, long-sightedness, glaucoma, cataracts, sinus problems, ear problems.

Resistance is Futile | The Vital Spirit | Laura Rowe | Empath Mentor

Resistance is Futile

That feeling you are experiencing? The one where you want to punch something and cry and implode, all at the same time? That is resistance. You will feel better when you let go. And yes, I am very aware that is an easy thing to say and ridiculously hard thing to do. So for now, just breathe. Long, slow, deep breaths. And if you feel it, have that temper tantrum. Yell, cry, stamp your feet, punch that pillow, scream, run really hard and really far. All that energy needs to come out. Every spiritual seeker has temper tantrums.

Spirituality isn’t about being peaceful and calm, it is about seeking your own truth. Not mine, not Buddha’s, not Deepak Chopra’s, your own. And being emotional, unreasonable, pissed off, confused, frustrated and disheartened happens, it is completely normal. You are not falling off the path, you are actually expanding into your essential self.

Comparison is Self-Harm | The Vital Spirit | Laura Rowe | Empath Mentor

Comparison is Self-Harm

Spirituality is individual, each path unique. It is detrimental and, unfortunately, common human behavior to compare ourselves to others, to want to categorize our path as being just like someone else’s in order to feel legitimate. Let go of the idea that your path is going to look like anyone else’s. It won’t. It may have similar segments, hills, and valleys in familiar places, but comparing it to an idealized version of another spiritual seeker or to someone who isn’t even on a spiritual path is completely unhelpful.

Self-judgment through comparison to others is one of the most damaging forms of self-harm. We are all worthy of our love and acceptance right this minute, not once we reach a certain goal, not once we finally quit smoking, but right this minute with all of our vices and perceived flaws. We are beings of the Divine. Comparison is only helpful if it is stretching and expanding you, not if it is a way to catalog all of your shortcomings. That list need never be written again.

Choose Love

Choose Love

Instead of condemning yourself for perceived weakness or failures, send love to your inner child instead. Love is our most powerful weapon, and there is no fear that is greater than love. The trick is you have to feed the love at least as much as you feed the fear. So when you want to criticize yourself, stop and choose to love that part of yourself instead. If it feels awkward or uncomfortable, it just means you haven’t been filling that love bank account. You have over-drafted with self-criticism checks. Make more love deposits, not less. Just like learning an instrument or riding a bike, you have to push through the hard part, just keep going. When you are at your lowest, send yourself love. Sometimes it is the only way out of the weeds and back to the path. If you want to catalog something, make it a list of things you like about yourself. Focus on that for a while. When you are experiencing the dark night of the soul, it is most important to remember that nothing lasts forever. The sun will rise. The darkness will end. Hang in there and, as best you can, remember that you are not falling apart. In fact, you are about to leap forward. You are stronger than the night and love is stronger than fear. Pick love and aim it at yourself first.

If you ever need help during a dark night of the soul, book a Quantum Alignment session for guidance, healing, and reassurance.

The Enchanted Life by Sharon Blackie

The Enchanted Life
by Sharon Blackie

FROM THE INTRODUCTION –

I believe that enchantment is an attitude of mind which can be cultivated, a way of approaching the world which anyone can learn to adopt: the enchanted life is possible for everybody. In this book I’ll share with you my own experiences, and the experiences of several men and women from around the world, as they demonstrate how we can bring enchantment into every aspect of our daily lives. Because enchantment, by my definition, has nothing to do with fantasy, or escapism, or magical thinking: it is founded on a vivid sense of belongingness to a rich and many-layered world; a profound and whole-hearted participation in the adventure of life.

The enchanted life presented here is one which is intuitive, which embraces wonder, and fully engages the creative imagination – but it is also deeply embodied, ecological, grounded in place and community. It flourishes on work that has heart and meaning; it respects the instinctive knowledge and playfulness of children. It understands the myths we live by; thrives on poetry, song and dance. It loves the folkloric, the handcrafted, the practice of traditional skills. It respects wild things, recognises the wisdom of the crow, seeks out the medicine of plants. It rummages and roots on the wild edges, but comes home to an enchanted home and garden. It is engaged with the small, the local, the ethical; enchanted living is slow living.

The Lightworker's Manifesto
by Karen Walrond

Many of us have strong convictions. We want to advocate for causes we care about--but which ones? We want to work for change--but will the emotional toll lead to burn out?

Leadership coach, lawyer, photographer, and activist Karen Walrond knows that when you care deeply about the world, light can seem hard to find. But when your activism grows out of your joy--and vice versa--you begin to see light everywhere.

In The Lightmaker's Manifesto, Walrond helps us name the skills, values, and actions that bring us joy; identify the causes that spark our empathy and concern; and then put it all together to change the world. Creative and practical exercises, including journaling, daily intention-setting, and mindful self-compassion, are complemented by lively conversations with activists and thought leaders such as Valarie Kaur, Brené Brown, Tarana Burke, and Zuri Adele. With stories from around the world and wisdom from those leading movements for change, Walrond beckons readers toward lives of integrity, advocacy, conviction, and joy.

By unearthing our passions and gifts, we learn how to joyfully advocate for justice, peace, and liberation. We learn how to become makers of light. -- Publisher's Description

Mirrors in the Earth
by Asia Suler

Reflections on Self-Healing from the Living World

In a series of 12 lyrical nature essays, herbalist, writer, and Earth intuitive Asia Suler illuminates the healing power of the living Earth--and gives us permission to nurture self-compassion and empathy as forces for personal and ecological healing.

In a time of unprecedented ecological devastation, it’s easy to feel hopeless and disconnected. It’s easier still to mask our inherent goodness--to imagine that our unique and precious gifts simply aren’t enough, or forget the power of our inborn empathy. For those of us who are highly sensitive, innately attuned to the workings and whispers of the natural world, it can be hard to embody the belief that we’re enough as we are--and that can heal the Earth.

Here, Suler reveals the opposite: our goodness, our empathy, our intuitive connections, and our capacity for self-compassion are more than personal traits or antidotes to despair: they are, in fact, our most potent vehicles for planetary transformation. And as we learn to more deeply nurture and accept ourselves, we unlock living, healing connections to Earth.

Combining poetic nature writing with exercises and reflection prompts at the end of each essay, Mirrors in the Earth coaxes us to come as we are: to discover and tend the inherent brilliance and medicine that lives in each of us. From the manatee-calm springs of wild Florida to the flower-dotted coves of the world’s most biodiverse mountains, Mirrors in the Earth is an invitation and encounter with the benevolence of the living world--and a nature therapy session for the soul.

Returning Home to Our Bodies
Abigail Rose Clarke

For readers of adrienne maree brown, Staci K. Haines, and Robin Wall Kimmerer

A body-based healing model that interrogates what we’ve been wrongly taught about hierarchies of nature and the body—and pushes back against the white supremacy, colonialism, patriarchy, and capitalism embedded in modern embodiment practices.

Pushing back against a consumerist, pleasure-centric somatics industry that privileges product over process, Abigail Rose Clarke reminds us that truly meaningful embodiment practice nurtures our relationships among self, nature, and community.

Combining the rigor of the scientific method with the poetry and lyricism of movement and somatic studies, Clarke’s somatic learning system—The Embodied Life Method—centers the body as a guide through today’s most seemingly intractable social and environmental challenges, reclaiming the body as a source of liberatory comfort in times of great uncertainty and yet, possibility.

With tools and practices to help us better understand and dismantle the many ways our bodies are weaponized to serve domination systems, topics covered include:

Harnessing the vitality of curiosity and experimentation
Using nature as a guide to possibility
Embracing the necessity of difference
Exposing the lie of universal isolation
Dismantling the fallacy of hierarchy
Uncovering the truth of endless capacity
Awe as a driving force for transformation
With methods honed over decades of inquiry, teaching, and practice,

Returning Home to Our Bodies provides a lucid, body-based model of healing and restoration—one that imagines a world beyond systems of domination, marginalization, and isolation to nurture embodied, whole-community liberation.

The Seeker's Guide
Elizabeth Lesser

In 1977, Elizabeth Lesser cofounded the Omega Institute, now America's largest adult-education center focusing on wellness and spirituality. Working with many of the eminent thinkers of our times, including Zen masters, rabbis, Christian monks, psychologists, scientists, and an array of noted American figures from L.A. Lakers coach Phil Jackson to author Maya Angelou, Lesser found that by combining a variety of religious, psychological, and healing traditions, each of us has the unique ability to satisfy our spiritual hunger.

In The Seeker's Guide, she synthesizes the lessons learned from an immersion into the world's wisdom traditions and intertwines them with illuminating stories from her daily life. Recounting her own trials and errors and offering meditative exercises, she shows the reader how to create a personal practice, gauge one's progress, and choose effective spiritual teachers and habits. Warm, accessible, and wise, this book provides directions through the four landscapes of the spiritual journey:

The Mind: learning meditation to ease stress and anxiety
The Heart: dealing with grief, loss, and pain; opening the heart and becoming fully alive
The Body: returning the body to the spiritual fold to heal and overcome the fear of aging and death
The Soul: experiencing daily life as an adventure of meaning and mystery

The Awakened Path: Transformation Through Healing

The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift. ~ Albert Einstein

Awakened Path | The Vital Spirit | Laura Rowe | Empath Mentor
The Beginning | The Vital Spirit | Laura Rowe | Empath Mentor

The Beginning...

I have always been a spiritual person. Someone who seeks to understand myself and how I fit into the world around me. Someone who believes in the idea of a consciousness greater than my own. And my awakened path got a big boost from a spiritual awakening when I entered therapy after I separated from my ex-husband 20 years ago.

I was traumatized by this relationship. I was choosing to heal from it and I discovered I was an empath at the age of 33. It was never a good relationship but as my husband aged and became more unhappy he decided to take out his anger and frustration on me.

I was a classic codependent empath who managed the emotions of my narcissistic/bipolar husband. I had a history of managing that energy from growing up with my mother (a much less toxic person with narcissistic tendencies). All the hooks a needy narcissist looks for were there in me when I met my husband at the tender and naïve age of 23.

The Awakening | The Vital Spirit | Laura Rowe | Empath Mentor

The Awakening

My spiritual awakening was realizing I couldn’t go on as I was living any longer. The process of discovering I was an empath and healing from the wounds left behind by my ex-husband and my family was an 8-year process for me. I was healing from the trauma and unhealthy patterns with counseling and energy healing modalities that were life-changing for me.

I was also being educated on the world of energy; chakras, meridians, angels, spirit guides, Spirit, soul, higher-self, and on and on. Add to that learning that I was an empath and being introduced to what that means, being overwhelmed by energy, finally coming to terms that I am and have always been psychic.

The Hallmarks

The Hallmarks of an Awakening

Spiritual awakenings are individual to each person; what prompts their awakening, the school of thought they learn, and how they incorporate it into their lives. However, the process of spiritual awakening contains several hallmarks shared by all participants.

* Surrendering our will and desire/belief that we are in control of what happens in our life.

* Finding faith that we will find our way despite being absolutely clueless as to how to proceed

* Finding a teacher who can clarify the process as we walk it and dispel our internal strife and self-talk that we are falling apart and will die shortly.

* Becoming aware of our motivations, expectations, and wounds

* Beginning the process of taking 100% responsibility for our lives. Yes, even when we can’t control the world, we are still in control of our behavior, emotions, actions, decisions, and thoughts. (Psst, this part never ends)

Empaths and The Awakened Path

Empaths and the Awakened Path

The timing of my spiritual awakening coincided with learning I was an empath so the two will forever be linked for me. Being an empath is a huge part of my spirituality and my awakened path.

In my spiritual awakening, working to take responsibility for my life meant examining all the wounding I had from being highly sensitive, psychic, and a healer in a family and a world that didn’t understand, appreciate, or accommodate those traits.

Like most empaths, I went through the stage of feeling victimized by my sensitivity. How could I learn to control my emotions when they seem to control me? It was a process that took time and it helped me to have a teacher and healer who walked the path with me.

Quantum Alignment | The Vital Spirit | Laura Rowe | Empath Mentor

Therapy and Energy Healing

I was lucky enough to have a therapist, energy healer, and spiritual teacher in one person, very unusual and getting more scarce due to licensure regulations. I do not believe that energy healing/spiritual work is a replacement for therapy or counseling if that is what is needed.

There are some excellent modalities for releasing stubborn trauma. I also believe strongly that if you are an empath you need a teacher/healer just as much as you need a therapist. They do different things and both are integral to the process of healing and becoming empowered empaths.

A note on trauma: Trauma can be created by any emotions not fully processed at the time of the incident. It doesn’t have to be big incidents of child abuse or witnessing a tragic event. Trauma can be neglect or being told you are “too sensitive” repeatedly. Trauma causes us to change our behavior to avoid that particular trauma from happening again, i.e. stifling your reactions so no one calls you sensitive or a baby.

Stigma and Change | The Vital Spirit | Laura Rowe | Empath Mentor

Stigma and Change

Since most of our behaviors and patterns have all been established by the time we are 7 years old, each one of us (empath or not) would benefit from some energy work or therapy. There still exists significant resistance in our culture to therapy or healing. As if choosing to heal or become a more responsible human being somehow makes us weak.

I am hopeful this stigma will someday go away, but until it does I will be talking about the need, especially among empaths, to do this work. You will reap the rewards and so will your children and community.

We as humans usually have to feel pain before we choose to address our own energetic armor and emotional baggage. Change is rarely something we choose just for the fun of it. Hitting rock bottom is a Dark Night of the Soul and is only the beginning of the journey.

And the path has no end | The Vital Spirit | Laura Rowe | Empath Mentor

And the Awakened path has no end...

And it is a path that never truly ends. I have had a variety of teachers over the years and chosen a handful of healing modalities to help me along the way. I have had several dark nights of the soul as well. In fact, I am going through one right now. The awakened path is not all love and light.

It is about self-mastery (never to be fully achieved in our lifetime), it is about self growth, it is about embodying the soul and becoming our true self. The us not stifled, beaten down, or crippled due to life experiences beyond our control.

And it is a path I cherish and that fills me with confidence and pride at my own achievements.
