I view personal healing as inherently political and spiritual, because when sensitive people liberate themselves from cultural conditioning and trauma, they help shift the collective toward compassion, justice, and wholeness.

I’m Laura Rowe (rhymes with how and now), an empath, spiritual seeker, and intuitive healer dedicated to helping empaths feel comfortable in their skin and deeply connected in this world. Though I grew up in a small Massachusetts town, I’ve called Portland, Oregon, home for the past 30 years.
I founded The Vital Spirit in 2013 in Portland, Oregon on the traditional lands of the Indigenous People of the Lower Columbia River (Multnomah, Cayuse, Umatilla, Walla Walla, Clackamas, Stl’pulmsh (Cowlitz), Confederated Tribes of Grande Ronde, and Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians).
Over the years, I’ve worked with hundreds of clients across the globe—from Canada and Brazil to Germany, the United Kingdom, and Australia. I regularly teach my signature class, Tools for Thriving as an Empath, alongside talks and groups focused on empathic living and spiritual growth.
My foundation in business operations, with a BA in Business Management and a Master’s in Organizational Management, cultivated my natural gift for systems thinking. This skill now allows me to quickly identify patterns in behavior and energy, informing my deep study of empaths and the unique challenges they face while developing methodologies to help them find balance.
I approach this work through a social justice lens, helping empaths explore their personal power while understanding the dynamics of our white supremacist, patriarchal, late-stage capitalist society. Our culture dismisses sensitivity as weakness, and my work focuses on healing those wounds—reframing sensitivity as strength and connecting empaths with their innate power.
My spiritual journey spans almost 40 years across various traditions and practices, including 20 years of training in intuitive energy healing modalities with certifications in Reiki and Theta Healing. For eight transformative years, I studied under my mentor Linda Kardos, a pioneer in intuitive energy healing.
As an empath myself, I intimately understand feeling different, misunderstood, and judged for sensitivity. I’m passionate about empowering empaths to inhabit their whole selves—accepting and deeply connecting with the truth of their being. Each of us possesses immeasurable power, and The Vital Spirit exists to remind people of this truth through whole-being wellness: body-mind-spirit. My intention is for clients to live more deliberate and authentic lives through compassionate empowerment.
When I first discovered I was an empath, I felt… conflicted. On one hand, there was relief—finally, an explanation for what I’d been experiencing my whole life. On the other, there was frustration—because back then, there wasn’t much out there to help me understand how to feel, how to heal, or how to turn what felt like a curse into a gift.
In 2005, empath wasn’t a term you’d find in medical or scientific circles. There were no Instagram accounts, podcasts, or thriving communities talking about it. There was just a small but mighty handful of voices, and for me, Judith Orloff, MD, was the beacon in the night. Her work gave validation to those of us living with deep emotional attunement, high sensitivity, and psychic perception. She was—and still is—pivotal in opening the door for mainstream acceptance of our experience.
Even now, being an empath isn’t exactly mainstream, but awareness is growing. More health professionals are recognizing that empathy at this level is something to understand, support, and manage.
In 2016, I made the decision to focus my business exclusively on empaths. I’d seen the gap—plenty of talk about surviving as an empath, but almost nothing about thriving. I wanted to go deeper, to explore what truly makes an empath an empath, and to help others live not just in resilience, but in joy, purpose, and vibrancy.
