Meditation will not carry you to another world, but it will reveal the most profound and awesome dimensions of the world in which you already live.
~ Zen Master Hsing Yun
The gift of quarantine is time slowing way down. It is also the absence of our “normal” routine. Collectively.
Life, as we knew it before the COVID-19 pandemic began, is over. No one knows what aspects will change. We don’t know what specific habits, activities, or places will be gone forever but we know, consciously or unconsciously, that our regular existence is gone.
In addition to our anxiety, there is also hope and curiosity in the idea that something else is being birthed in this bed-rest pregnancy Mother Earth is enduring.
We won’t know how things will change, what opportunities will open up for us but they are coming and we can let them evolve.
We are collectively going through a “dark night of the soul” and I am going to be honest, part of me is excited about it. It feels so much more comfortable than any dark night I have experienced alone. Having the entire population of the world join me for this experience is reassuring.
The raw emotions and fears of this dark night will be understood and shared by billions. We won’t be alone in this messy, unexpected, and utterly unknowable journey.
Mostly my excitement about this process stems from knowing the growth and expansion that always results from a soul searching journey. The magnitude of the change is likely to be grand.
Shared trauma can unite people as they have never been united before. And it can breakdown relationships and communities as well. There will be endings that feel as though we could never recover from them. And of course, those will be the beginnings of all that will come to be.
As we sit in our separate homes, physically separate from each other but spiritually growing closer together, I have a request of you. Can you spend a few minutes each day meditating on what you would like a few of those changes to be? Even better, could you write them down? You can repeat the same thing every day until new ideas for our collective post-pandemic future come to mind.
Our thoughts and intentions can become our reality. Let’s co-create a world that is better than the one we are taking a break from right now.
