As we march slowly towards the winter solstice, I am feeling the pull towards my inner world. This time of year when we are all so busy, our natural rhythms of the seasons are calling for us to slow down and go within. And I find myself wanting to go back to the basics of meditation and probing into the basic questions of spiritual consciousness, who am I? How can I live/act from a place of peace and grace?

The basics of mindfulness call on us to acknowledge that our consciousness or spirit or soul is not our mind. The ancient Egyptians referred to the mind as just another sense, like seeing or hearing. It was one more source of input into deciphering our reality. A useful tool for exploration of the world but certainly not any more “factual” than sight alone, or smell alone. Our consciousness is, in fact, the observer, the one who is interpreting our reality through those physical senses.The observer is the conductor of your orchestra of input.

When we spend time routinely in meditation we can become intimate with the feeling of expansiveness that we create from engaging the observer. The observer creates distance from our thoughts and distance creates freedom from reactivity. From this expansive place, we can choose our actions and reactions to stimuli rather than lighting up like a pinball machine when our buttons are pushed.

Over the next few weeks, I plan to spend more time in meditation. December can be hectic with parties, plans, and deadlines aplenty but I hope you will make some time to be still as we journey into the darkness. Wishing you all peace.
